MARKET FOCUS

BACnet Today and the Smart Grid

In a smart grid world, facilities become full partners in supporting and managing the electrical grid. They trim consumption during peak periods along with maximizing usage of local renewable power or on-site generation.

Engineers and other building leaders are working through ASHRAE to add intelligent energy usage into commercial and institutional buildings. A primary example of this work is proposed Standard 201, Facility Smart Grid Information Model. ASHRAE has partnered with the National Electrical Manufacturers Association to enable appliances and control systems to manage electrical loads and generation sources in response to communication with a “smart” electrical grid for real-time pricing and energy savings.

Since its introduction in 1995, the ASHRAE BACnet® standard has transformed the marketplace with open-system communication of building data.In recognition of BACnet’s and the smart grid’s importance to the buildings industry, ASHRAE Journal will publish its 11th annual supplement for the November issue.

Advertisers in the BACnet Today supplement receive at no additional charge:

  • 100 copies of the supplement for internal or external use
  • 1 reprint license upon request for reprinting one BACnet Today article along with your message
  • Bonus matching space for one-half page advertisements or larger within the section

BACNET TODAY & SMART GRID ARTICLES…

Utilities and HVAC Industry Working Together Through Smart Devices

Many more power plants would be needed if electricity providers must meet peak load demands that occur only for a few hours each year. Rather than building plants that are seldom needed, the HVAC&R industry and power generation providers are working together to reduce demand as needed. This article will be shared for its information on variable-speed compressors, smart thermostats, and thermal energy storage.

Designing & Purchasing Today’s BACnet Building Automation Systems

The Internet, Smart Grid, energy dashboards and sustainable building guidelines require a new approach to building automation system purchases and design. This article shows how to design and specify systems along with using BACnet. Engineers and designers will read this article for its information on BACnet communicating with air handlers, variable frequency drives, condensing boiler plants, lighting systems, chiller plants and meters.

Integrating Light Control into Energy Management Systems

Intelligent control strategies that manage lighting HVAC and window systems will enhance a building’s ability to respond to and support an energy management strategy. This article’s information on HVAC energy management, lighting controls, energy management systems will be kept for increased energy performance.

Using Automated Dynamic Response Communications

Intelligent control strategies that manage lighting HVAC and window systems will enhance a building’s ability to respond to and support an energy management strategy. This article’s information on using dynamic response communications for large commercial and industrial buildings will be kept for increased energy performance.

MORE NOVEMBER ISSUE ARTICLES…

Commissioning During Building Design

An emerging trend is design-phase commissioning, where the commissioning begins with building mechanical system design documents. This article will be well-read for its information on performing design-phase commissioning while avoiding common pitfalls in the process.

Thermal Energy Storage Reduces Energy Costs in Texas Hospital

The Texas Medical Center in Houston uses the tallest stratified chilled water storage tank in the world for its closed chilled water distribution system. Engineers and building owners will keep the information in this article for its guidance on real-time utility pricing, thermal energy storage, and chilled water systems.

Air Quality and Thermal Comfort’s Effect on Productivity

Thermal and air quality consist of a large portion of first costs and operating costs. However, diminished levels of productivity can cost a business considerably. This article examines research on productivity and performance, including windows, personalized ventilation, lighting, airborne dust and office machinery.

Demand-Controlled Ventilation for Commercial Kitchens

Commercial buildings with food service can consume the greatest amount of energy. The first step in reducing this exhaust airflow is designing high efficiency hoods with low capture and containment airflow rates and the second is using demand control ventilation to further reduce exhaust airflow. This article will be kept and shared for its practical guidance on ventilation, fan control systems, variable frequency drives, and exhaust hoods.

Effective Room Air Distribution

How do engineers best deliver ventilation and air conditioning to spaces?  Architects and owners desiring to achieve high-efficiency status for buildings are challenging engineers to design systems that are at least 30% more efficient than the base system in ASHRAE Standard 90.1. The base System of ASHRAE 90.1 is overhead air delivery with VAV air supply. Improving on this base system is a real challenge. Architects and engineers will read this article for its information on using underfloor, displacement and chilled beams.

Ground-Source Heat Pump Performance Rated in Commercial Buildings

A survey of occupants in buildings served by ground-source heat pumps revealed that increased comfort can occur simultaneously  with improved energy efficiency. The article will be kept for its information on heat pumps, occupant comfort and energy management systems.

Special Advertising Opportunities

Reach the Building Leaders Driving India’s Rapid Group with the 2013 ACREX Show Guide
India hosts the ninth largest economy in the world and average annual growth rate of 5.8%. ASHRAE Journal is partnering with ISHRAE Journal to offer advertising in the 2013 Show Guide. The 14th edition of ACREX will be held in Mumbai.

The 2013 ACREX Show Guide will be published inside every copy of the February issue of ASHRAE Journal, October-December issue of ISHRAE Journal and receive unique floor distribution for the approximately 25,000 visitors attending ACREX. Only the Show Guide and ACREX Directory will receive floor distribution for advertisements.

The thousands of ACREX attendees are an attractive marketing target since global demand for HVAC equipment is predicted to rise at a rate of 6.2 percent annually. The Asia-Pacific region are projected to outpace the world average for growth. The cold chain industry in India is growing at over 20% annually. Over 50% of the Indian workforce is directly involved in growing food. To resist rising food prices, the Indian government promotes the building of cold storage facilities to preserve the food chain. Deadline for advertising orders: Nov. 16, 2012.
