The Gift of Knowledge…

Consider your own education to become an HVAC&R professional. A variety of people probably helped you obtain the education that is the cornerstone of your success. It may have been a combination of financial support from family, friends, loans, scholarships and grants. You probably had mentors who encouraged you when things got tough and guided you to make good decisions.

Have you considered how you might give back to your profession by helping the next generation of HVAC&R engineers? The ASHRAE Scholarship Program encourages and assists HVAC&R education through scholarships at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The mission of the ASHRAE Scholarship Program is to motivate students and prospective students worldwide to pursue an engineering or technology career in the HVAC&R field by offering scholarships to provide financial support for their education and training. These scholarships will encourage new members who embrace the ASHRAE mission.

You can establish a named endowed scholarship for a minimum gift of $60,000. Such a gift would make annual awards to support HVAC&R students in your name. The distribution policy is currently 5% so a $100,000 scholarship fund would pay $5,000 a year, in perpetuity. If your endowment fund grows in excess of the annual distribution, future generations could enjoy even more scholarship support.

You can establish the selection criteria for scholarship recipients, such as attendees of a particular school or who reside in a specific region. If you wish to provide scholarships for students in a field or school, here are three suggested options:

  • Scholarships Based on Financial Need
  • Scholarships Based on Academic Merit
  • Scholarships with Neither Financial Need nor Academic Merit Specified

Each year ASHRAE awards 17 to 19 scholarships worth a total of almost $100,000.

Here is what some of our grateful recipients had to say!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support of my continuing education with this scholarship. I will be able to reach my life and educational goals. I will do my best to make the Scholarship Committee proud.

With appreciation and gratitude,
Rhone Jadis

Dear ASHRAE Scholarship Trustees,

Thank you for the award of the David C.J. Peters Scholarship. It is a great honor to receive this award. I understand that David was a influential member of Southland Industries, which I interned last summer, and it means a lot  to receive the scholarship in his name. The scholarship will immensely help with tuition costs next year, and I cannot express how grateful I am for this!

Thank you again,
Julia Pollard

Dear ASHRAE Scholarship Trustees,

Thank you for selecting me to receive the Willis H. Carrier Scholarship for $10,000.  It is an honor to be chosen for this prestigious award and I am deeply appreciative of your support. Your support has relieved and enormous worry about the cost of tution and will significantly lower, if not negate, my loans next year at kansas State University.

I am currently a senior in Artitectural Engineering with a mechanical, eletricial, plumbing  (MEP) emphasis. Upon graducation next May, I hope to become a consulting engineer and eventually  become a Project Manager. I am currently the Secretary of the Kansas State ASHRAE Student Chapter.

Thank you again for your generosity and support. The scholarship has motivated me to work hard to complete my degree and give back as much to ASHRAE as each of you and Willis H. Carrier have.

Sincerely yours,

Patrick McGrail

I just wanted to take the time to say thank you for awarding me the Benny Bootle Scholarship. I feel truly honored to be a scholarship recipient for ASHRAE. It was so kind of you to invite my husband and I to dinner and the meeting. I really enjoyed the presentation about how to effectively promote economically friendly HVAC solutions, especially since I want to use my engineering degree to help with environmental remediation and protection. It was interesting to see in the presentation many of the economic analysis tools that I was taught in my engineering economics course mentioned. The financial assistance provided by this scholarship will help me focus on my studies and not worry as much about money. Thank you again for everything.

Sincerely, Lauren Bridges

Provide for a Scholarship through ASHRAE Foundation in your Will…

Perhaps you would like to consider a scholarship in your charitable planning. A bequest from your will or living trust can be the answer to many of your charitable giving needs.

You avoid any up-front capital gain tax on property passing to ASHRAE Foundation through your will, thereby putting the asset’s full value to work for the ASHRAE Foundation. Your estate is entitled to an unlimited charitable deduction to offset both State and Federal estate taxes. As with current gifts, bequests may be designated either as unrestricted—providing the most flexibility—or restricted; that is, designated for a specific purpose.

Benefits of a gift through your Will

  • Distribution of estate as intended by donor
  • Avoidance of estate and inheritance taxes
