A gateway building to the future new neighborhood of market-rate high-rises and affordable mid-rises, Rene Cazenave Apartments provides economically at-risk residents with affordable and accessible mini-studio apartments coupled with social, educational and medical facilities. Key strategies included reducing long term energy use and costs, creating healthy living environments, and maximizing seismic resilience. Design innovations such as a solar canopy and resilient post-tensioned shear walls contributed toward meeting these goals.

From Church to School: Repurposing & Adapting
 
With increasing need for classrooms, this article explains how a West Seattle church was reimagined for a 55,000 square-foot school for kindergartners through eighth-graders. Along with designing a second-story classroom suite within the 45-foot church nave, the school includes efficiency improvements to consume only 19 kBtu/SF annually, a 40% reduction from typical schools of this size.
