Hospital Facilities Managers Fight High Energy Costs
CHICAGO—Hospital facilities managers are experiencing and combating
high energy costs, according to a recent study. More than 90%
of respondents to a survey of U.S. hospital facilities managers
by Health Facilities Management magazine and the American Society
for Healthcare Engineering reported higher energy costs over the
previous year, and more than half cited increases in double-digit
percentages. Ninety-three percent of respondents reported that
they will be implementing energy-savings initiatives in their
construction/renovation projects for the next three years.

Semiconductor Plant Aims for High Sustainability
RICHARDSON, Texas—Texas Instruments is building a semiconductor
fabrication plant that could be a model for sustainable building.
The plant, scheduled to open in 2007, is expected to produce an
estimated millions of dollars in annual energy savings due to
HVAC systems using chilled water, heat recovery, solar water heating,
daylighting and other technologies. The $1.5 million HVAC systems
are expected to pay for themselves within two years. If the office
building and plant receive gold and silver LEED ® certification,
respectively, it is believed that it will be the largest facility
to do so.

ASHRAE Broadcast Covers Multiple Benefits Solutions
ASHRAE will host a free satellite broadcast and simultaneous
webcast, Multiple Benefits Solutions for Enhanced Building
Security, on Nov. 14. The program will focus on methods that
can be used in design, construction and operation of buildings
to reduce vulnerabilities while also providing benefits such as
improved reliability, safety, comfort, energy use, and operating
costs, according to Lawrence G. Spielvogel, P.E., Fellow/Life
Member ASHRAE, chair of ASHRAE’s Presidential Ad Hoc Committee
on Homeland Security.

(ESR) Valve and Control Board offers advanced diagnostics to
indicate a broken motor wire. In addition, a regulator-position
algorithm indicates when the valve is clogged and triggers an alarm
to "unclog" it.

Commercial Split Systems From Lennox Industries
DALLAS—Lennox Industries introduces two 3- to 5-ton commercial
split systems. Both the T-Class™ TS/TPA and the S-Class™ SS/SPB
models are available with R-410A refrigerant. The T-Class TS/TPA
line features high-efficiency scroll compressors and outdoor coils
for efficient heat transfer and operation. The S-Class SS/SPB
line features a two-stage compressor to reduce temperature swings
and provide optimal cooling, dehumidification and heating.

Humidity Control Unit From Munters
GLENDALE HEIGHTS, Ill.—The new Humidity Control Unit (HCU)
from Munters Moisture Control Services combines cooling and desiccant
dehumidification technologies in one system to control dew point
temperatures in hot, humid climates. It controls humidity on an
as-needed basis, when humidity levels exceed setpoint. All of
the energy required for the operation of its desiccant dehumidifier
is recycled from cooling components.

Controller From Honeywell
MINNEAPOLIS—The WEB-201 controller from Honeywell is designed
for smaller facilities, remote sites, and for equipment control
and monitoring in larger facilities. Up to 66 points, using various
combinations of I/O modules, can be connected to the controller.
It is operated by the Niagara AX™ Framework ®, designed
to integrate disparate protocols including LonWorks ®,
BACnet ®, MODbus ®, and Internet-based standards.
