Daikin Purchases McQuay's Parent Company

CARROLLTON, Texas—Daikin Industries announced that it will purchase McQuay’s parent company, Malaysia-based OYL Industries. The purchase reportedly will make Osaka, Japan-based Daikin the second-largest manufacturer of HVAC equipment in the world. OYL and McQuay will continue to operate as subsidiaries of Daikin. The acquisition, which is subject to regulatory approval, will not be completed for several months, according to Daikin.

Architects Lobby Mayors to Commit to Carbon-Neutral Buildings

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. Conference of Mayors is scheduled to vote during its annual meeting in June on a measure endorsing a goal of carbon neutrality for all city-funded buildings by 2030. Resolution 50 is sponsored by the mayors of Chicago, Seattle, Miami, and Albuquerque. The American Institute of Architects is lobbying for its passage. AIA has created a Web site to educate its members about the measure and has written sample letters for members to forward to local authorities.

Professionals Say Energy Efficiency, Building Automation Are Key Issues

WESTPORT, Conn.—HVAC&R professionals are most interested in learning more about improving energy efficiency, building automation, and sustainable building technology, according to an online survey by the AHR Expo. According to the 2006 AHR Expo Visitor Survey, 99% of visitors attended the Show because they felt finding new products was important. Show management will use the survey to gauge the pulse of the industry and to help plan 2007 Show offerings.

Annual Meeting Seminar to Examine Airborne Transmission of Infectious Diseases

Airborne and droplet transmission of infectious diseases and effectiveness of isolation room ventilation will be the topic of a seminar at the 2006 ASHRAE Annual Meeting. Speakers will discuss effective design for applications including isolation rooms, surgical suites and entire isolation care facilities to minimize transmission of infectious diseases. The Annual Meeting will be held on June 24–28 in Quebec City, QC, Canada. The seminar, Preparing for the Next Pandemic: Controlling Transmission of Infectious Diseases in Hospitals, will be held from 10:45 a.m.–12:15 p.m., Monday, June 26.
