Is Stress a Factor in Sick Building Syndrome?

LONDON—Sick building syndrome may be related to stress, according to studies in London and Singapore. The UK researchers surveyed civil servants and found that high job demands and low levels of support were linked with high rates of symptoms such as headaches, nausea, respiratory problems, and unusual tiredness. They found that dry air and hot offices increased symptoms slightly, but the more important factor was stress. Researchers in Singapore found more symptoms of sick building syndrome among workers who reported high levels of physical and mental stress.

2007 AHR Expo Expanding to Meet Exhibitor Demand

WESTPORT, Conn.—More than 1,200 companies have reserved space for the 2007 AHR Expo in Dallas, and the show management is adding more space to meet continuing exhibitor demand. Clay Stevens, president of International Exposition Company, said the reserved space in the Dallas Convention Center already fills the space initially allocated for the 2007 event. He expects the 2007 AHR Expo will be the largest AHR Expo held in the Southwest.

Evidence Linking Mold Exposure to Illness Lacking, Say Researchers

BALTIMORE—Some of the blame attributed to mold exposure for health problems is not supported by good medical evidence, researchers say in an article in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. The researchers from John Hopkins University School of Medicine reported that there is scientific evidence that ingesting large quantities of mold from contaminated or spoiled food can lead to serious illnesses, but there is no scientific evidence proving that inhaling toxins from molds is harmful.

ASHRAE Studies Impact of Ventilation on Health

ASHRAE is funding research on the effects of ventilation rates on occupant health. A panel of medical and engineering professionals will review existing research and literature on the effect of ventilation on health in various types of buildings. The primary focus will be on ventilation rates, but the researchers also will study pollutant sources, source strength and pollutant concentrations.
